Dating back to the 1650's, fore-edge paintings are a way of hiding a painted scene on the edge of a book that can only be viewed when the pages are fanned out.
These GIF's demonstrate how these images are shown. Some of these books even have double Fore-edge painting which can only be seen when the pages are fanned at a certain angle.
