Metta World Peace, formerly known as Ron Artest before legally changing his name in September 2011, was born and raised in Queensbridge projects in Queens, New York. As a teenager, World Peace was teamed with future NBA players Elton Brand and Lamar Odom on the same Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) team. Artest was selected by the Chicago Bulls with the 16th pick of the 1999 NBA Draft and spent 3 years with the team. Midway through the 2001–02 season, Artest was traded by Chicago to the Indiana Pacers. He made the 2004 NBA All-Star Game as a reserve and was named the Defensive Player of the Year. On November 19, 2004, Artest was at the center of an altercation among players and fans during a game between Artest's Pacers and the home team Detroit Pistons and as a result was suspended for the rest of the season. Metta World Peace was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in 2009 and was considered a massive risk after an elbow to James Harden's head. Needless to say Metta has shown his share of racy behavior, so what would he be considered for the Knicks here in New York? I guess we'll have to wait and see. Either way I think the move was a great one for NYK to provide some support for Amare Stoudemire, Carmelo Anthony and Tyson Chandler. What do you think?
Knicks Acquire Metta World Peace
The New York Knicks and the 33 year old Vet have agreed upon a 1 year deal with the opportunity for another if Metta exercises the second year of the contract, a player option.
After an interesting four years in Los Angeles, where Metta won a Championship alongside Kobe Bryant and couch Phil Jackson in 2010, the 6 foot 7 forward will be returning to his hometown.
