These large, intricate and ornate works by Asad Faulwell beautifully portray female combatants from the Algerian War of Independence.

The works attempt to show how the women were both aggressors and victims. The juxtaposition of colorful patterns to the bleak subject matter evokes a lot of emotion. The use of colorful and intricate patterns is remincsent of middle eastern tapestries and the pieces do a great job of portraying a time and place. Asad is a Los Angeles based artist. The series is titled "Les Femmes D'Alger" in reference to the series by Delacroix and Picasso.
