A very small town on the island of Sicily bears a beautiful sight. Caltagirone is home to a staircase that for about a month, from May 8th to June 3rd, was decorated with floral designs so that visitors could admire the grandeur of its scale.

The Staircase of Santa Maria del Monte, built in 1608, has 142-steps which are each decorated with a different ceramic, using styles and figures derived from the millennial tradition of pottery making. During the annual La Scala Flower Festival, held as a tribute to Our Lady of Conadomini, potted plants and flowers of different shades and colors are arranged on the staircase to create one enormous design. This design was created by Angelo Murgo, using 2,000 plants and flowers which included geranium, marigold and boxwood.
