May Sum creates art by carving the faces of celebrities past and present out of single tubes of lipstick, using just a knife and a few toothpicks. Two years ago May made a sculpture using a stick of concealer, and then went on to lipsticks. The reason was simple. She had plenty of supply! She has since made sculptures of people, fashion objects and even scenes, adding more details as her technique matures. The latest exhibition at Hysan Place was titled “Woman’s Power” showing sculptures of fashion icons. May even gave a live demo on how to make simple lipstick sculptures, although she may take up to a week to make an intricate one.
